What Men Are Tr*sh Really Means
We are always working on ways to make our groups, brand, and family more accessible and inclusive to you all out there.
We went live and gave a presentation on the topic of Men are ___ in our Facebook group.
With help in collaboration from @rebel.lou and @floboism we put together this informative breakdown about where the phrase came from, what it means and why you definitely shouldn't say "But, not all men..."
It is the first of many social justice topics we will be diving into as part of The Punky Family Education Space.
Over the years we have had a collection of important threads where member's have given lots of emotional labour. So we are working towards being able to share that easily with all of you.

What is #MenAreTrash?
MenAreTrash began as a social media movement, originated in South Africa
as a response to the overwhelming instances of gender-based violence against women at the hands of men. It has since evolved into a global movement and is used as a battle cry against injustice towards woman, from comments regarding appearances through to online abuse, and even extending to other movements, including LGBTQ+ and #MeToo.
MenAreTrash is for men too!
Men are more likely to be the victims of violence at the hands of other men. Men are more likely to be raped by other men. Men are more likely to be murdered by other men. And equally as important, men are more likely to die from suicide because of the perpetuation of toxic masculinity
(the idea that men should be in control and not be vulnerable).
‘Men are trash’ is not a complete sentence.
It is the start of a much bigger conversation about the overwhelming number of men who uphold the tenets of an unequal, violent, racist and patriarchal society. It is a combative approach to hate, targeting misogyny and violence against womxn. It is not targeting ‘men’, but the system they ultimately benefit from.
Not All Men…
‘Men are trash’ does not mean ALL men, but unless the men that you are referring to when you ‘not all men’ us are actively working towards the eradication and dismantling of an institution that exists to their ultimate benefit, and the detriment of so many others, then we’re not listening.
Not All Men…
Every time you say ‘not all men’, you are:
- derailing an important conversation
- forcing people to continually re-traumatise themselves
- invalidating their trauma
- minimising their pain
- subjecting them to further disenfranchisement
So what can you do?
- Call out misogyny when you see/hear it.
- Stand up to normative (toxic) masculinity.
- Listen to the voices of those speaking up from a place of experience.
- Learn better. Know better. Do better.
